In the class, writing for engineering, the course was able to teach many valuable skills. The course has also challenged us with very tough assignments. The course came with valuable grammar lessons as well. I learned how to use CCNY’s online library, how to use APA citation, how to collaborate with others, reading articles and books, learned about the audience, and much more. I learned these through the multiple projects I had to complete during this course. For example, the Resume and cover letter, the Lab Report, the group proposal, and the technical description. This course has taught me many valuable lessons.
The first assignment for this writing class was the Resume and cover letter. This definitely was an interesting and helpful assignment because I created an actual Resume and Cover letter that I can use for future jobs/internships. First I gathered all the information about myself, my address, the location of the college I go to, jobs/volunteering work, my skills, and achievements. I then put it all on one page to make it look neat and easy for the reader. Then I worked on the cover letter. This helped me with improving my writing skills by teaching me how to talk to someone who I want an interview with. I was able to find and use keywords to boost my credibility. Finally I found a job posting and uploaded it with my Resume and Cover Letter.
The second assignment for this course was the Lab report. There were multiple steps and pages to this assignment. For the assignment I had to make a lab report based on a simple experiment which was rolling a pair of dice and reporting and analyzing the outcomes. I had to come up with a theory on what number would be rolled the most out of 100 rolls. I had to list steps and materials, make 2 figures or more depending on the data I have collected from the roll, create an analysis, using references with APA format, find scholarly sources, and look to the future. Overall this assignment reminded me on how to create a proper lab report.
The third and probably the biggest assignment was the Group proposal. I had to choose 3 teammates for this project. The whole purpose of this assignment was to create a student center for our college campus because CCNY lacked a student center. For the student center we had to think about multiple factors like, how big will it be, what are the contents of the student center, where will it be, the construction times, etc. My group and I had the goal of creating a good student center. In our proposal we also added, An introduction that introduces the problem, outlines the body of the proposal, an action plan that explains what goes in our center, a costs and benefits section which explains why people should invest into our student center, a team section which gives biography paragraphs about each member, a conclusion which sums up the project, references and an appendix. I learned how to work together with people, thinking, surveying, etc.
The final project was the technical description. I wrote about Java and why it is beneficial towards games. I had to make a poster which I presented to the class. I did hours of research to make the presentation interesting. I found photos related to my poster and inputted it into the poster. The top criteria which made my topic worthy is, it’s interesting, related to my major, appropriate, researchable at a college level, illustratable, and a game changer. I have learned a lot of skills from this project. For example, I enhanced my skills on how to research at a college level, writing concisely, breaking down info into chunks, developing layout skills, and explaining to my peers.
Other than assignments, this course has also taught me grammar lessons and how to use proper words for different occasions. The quest has also allowed me to test my knowledge. I was able to laugh in this class while learning, which is what I think is the best way for someone to learn.
In conclusion, this course was very beneficial for me and I would take this course again. The professor was very chill and made class better, the topics and assignments required us to think outside of the box and use our brains even more. In addition to many other things, I learned how to read books and articles, work with people, use CCNY’s online library, and understand the audience. The several assignments I had to finish for this course taught me these things. For instance, the technical description, the lab report, the group proposal, the resume, and the cover letter. I’ve learned a lot of important lessons from this training.
